In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become the Mexican version of St. Patrick\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>Multi-national corporations like Budweiser and Kraft have effectively turned it into a pseudo-ethnic holiday used as another excuse to get drunk and consume. La Batalla de Puebla is hardly mentioned, including by many Mexicans.<\/p>\n<p>Still fresh in our community\u2019s collective memory, however, is a time before corporations even seemed to care about Mexicans and our traditions and when Cinco de Mayo was a day of community and cultural affirmation.<\/p>\n<p>Kids would dress up as china poblanas and charros, folkl\u00f3rico and danza azteca groups would perform, grills would be ablaze and maybe a parade and a car show would entertain families on this day.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, these traditions are very much alive and are still observed every year in our communities \u2014 as the photo above from <a href=\"http:\/\/minnesota.publicradio.org\/display\/web\/2013\/05\/05\/arts\/photos-cinco-de-mayo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">West St. Paul\u2019s Cinco de Mayo<\/a> event shows.<\/p>\n<p>The big difference is that today there are entire events posing as Cinco de Mayo festivals but which are actually <a href=\"http:\/\/charlotte5demayo.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">corporate festivals<\/a> held to promote <a href=\"http:\/\/charlotte5demayo.com\/index.php\/sponsors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">products and brands<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Can we take back from multinationals something that has belonged to us for decades?<\/p>\n<p>Can we reclaim Cinco de Mayo as a day that celebrates Mexico\u2019s heroic victory for democracy and freedom over French imperialism in the La Batalla de Puebla?<\/p>\n<p>Of course we can!<\/p>\n<p>Here are 5 things we can do to make it happen:<\/p>\n<p>1. Support events hosted by and for the benefit of local non-profits and community based organizations.<\/p>\n<p>2. Don\u2019t go to corporate Cinco de Mayo events. No matter how much free shit they give away.<\/p>\n<p>3. Remind white people Cinco de Mayo celebrates the killing of white people!<\/p>\n<p>4. Know the history of <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkmexican.tumblr.com\/tagged\/Cinco-de-Mayo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cinco de Mayo<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkmexican.tumblr.com\/post\/22494969761\/cinco-de-mayo-batalla-de-puebla-150-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La Batalla de Puebla<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>5.
